Apro questa rubrica con lo Squero di San Trovaso, ossia uno dei più famosi e antichi squeri veneziani. Situato nell’omonimo Rio, è uno degli ultimi ancora in funzione anche se le sue attività nel tempo sono mutate. Inizialmente lo Squero era il cantiere dove si costruivano e riparavano le imbarcazioni a remi tipiche veneziane; oggi invece vi vengono solo più prodotte e riparate le gondole. Il nome deriva dalla parola “squara" (ossia l’attrezzo adoperato per costruire le imbarcazioni) e l’edificio è caratterizzato da una forma assai particolare rispetto all’architettura veneziana. E’ costruito infatti come una casa di montagna e ciò era dovuto alle origini alpine e alla fantasia degli Squeraioli, ossia i maestri d’ascia.
Lo squero è caratterizzato da un piano inclinato verso il canale o il rio per la messa a secco e il varo delle barche. Alle spalle del piano, recintato su due lati, è presente una costruzione in legno coperta e aperta verso il piano di varo, detta tesa. La tesa costituisce allo stesso tempo la zona di lavoro vera e propria, al riparo dalle intemperie, e il deposito degli attrezzi. Tipicamente, le abitazioni contigue o, dove presente, il piano superiore dello squero fungono anche da abitazione del proprietario o del capomastro.
I would like to open this blog with the St. Trovaso's Squero, that is one of the most famous and ancient in Venice. Situated in the homonymous rio, it is one of the last still working, even though its activities have changed over the years.
At the beginning the Squero was the shipyard where the most famous venetian rowing boat were built and repaired; nowadays instead only gondolas are built and repaired here.
The name Squero comes from the word "squara", that is the tool used for creating those boats. The building itself, instead, has a particular shape, which reminds of a mountain house: this is due to the alpine origins of the Squeraioli, that is the masters who build gondolas.
The Squero is characterised by a plane inclined towards the canal, used for hauling and launching boats. Behind stands a sheltered wooden building, open towards the inclined plane and called "tesa". The "tesa" is the working space, tucked up from the weather and the storage area.
The buildings near the Squero or the upper floor itself represent the home of the Squeraioli.
