La chiesa di Santa Margherita e il Campanile decollato - Saint Margaret's church and the beheaded churchtower

Una delle cose che mi ha colpito di più durante i primi giri a Venezia è stata notare la quantità di campanili presenti nella città lagunare: un’infinità! La loro struttura è pressochè similare, ma ce n’è uno in particolare che ha da subito attirato la mia curiosità, ossia il campanile decollato della chiesa di Santa Margherita.

Prima di arrivare a Venezia avevo sempre pensato al termine “decollato” come riferito unicamente all’azione di decollare, appunto. Da quando sono qui ho scoperto invece che in veneziano “degolà” (decollato) significa anche decapitato e che, nel caso specifico di questo campanile, si riferisce al fatto che è mozzato. La parte superiore fu infatti demolita nel 1808 perché pericolante e oggi ne resta solamente la metà inferiore, che rimane anche l’unica parte della chiesa che si affaccia su Campo Santa Margherita.

Per quanto riguarda la chiesa stessa, invece, fondata nell’853, è stata sconsacrata nel 1810 durante le soppressioni napoleoniche. Attualmente ospita l’Auditorium Santa Margherita dell’Università Ca’ Foscari, ma in passato è stato magazzino di tabacchi, studio dello scultore Luigi Borro e persino un cinema, nell’ambito delle attività della Camera del Lavoro di Venezia.

One of the things that struck me most during my first tours of Venice has been noticing how many churchtowers are present in the town: a zillion! They all have a similar structure, but there is one in particular that caught immediately my attention: the beheaded churchtower of Saint Margaret’s church.

The upper part, in fact, was cut off in 1808 since it was unsafe and nowadays we can see only the lower half, which remains the only part of the church facing Campo Saint Margaret.

As regards the church itself, instead, it was founded in 853 and unchurched on the 1810, during napoleonic suppressions. Nowadays it houses the Saint Margaret’s Concert Hall of Ca’ Foscari University, but in the past it worked also as tobacco warehouse, as studio of the sculptor Luigi Borro and also as cinema of Venice Trade Union Offices.
